Ties of Allegiance explores the archive as a playful space - warping the mediums through which images, objects and stories of Yugoslavia's role in the Non-Aligned Movement are preserved and presented, interwoven with intimate memories of communities and individuals. A hollow globe, made out of lightweight material is suspended in space and time, after it’s fulfilled it’s representational role in media spectacles brought to life by emerging broadcasting tech. Satin ribbons, used in ceremonial openings hang from the structure. Small screens attached to the globe display animated expressions. The events are narrated by a rare vintage portable TV cassette radio my aunt bought in Algiers. The work was produced for a duo show, Celestial Gestures organised in collaboration with Akinsola Lawanson at U10 Belgrade in 2023. An expanded version of the show was presented at SET in Woolwich, London extrapolating the idea towards Woolwich as a site where global communication industries developed in late 19th and early 20th centuries, using this industrial node as a starting point for conversation about internationalist movements, communication industries and media spectacle.
