A young architect-citizen of New Babylon coming to terms with a feeble reality sets out on a journey through a Situationist heterotopia envisioned by a conceptual artist in the 1960s. Caught between the voice of an all-knowing narrator and an anthropomorphic rock-circle, she tries to understand what it feels like to inhabit New Babylon’s internal workings. Based on a Situationist heterotopia of the same name, New Babylon is a generated environment, founded on thinking about the archetype of utopia, and at the same time, understanding the previous, historical projects of worldmaking. This artwork is primarily focused on the research of new developments in film industry, principles and infrastructures of creating a utopia, and how it incorporates cinema, games, and the design of playful spaces. New Babylon probes the limits of ideas around creativity and playfulness, critiqueing the male-centered, civilizational role it plays in Western political thought, positioning multiple voices contesting each other, each having their own take on what it means to inhabit a space in a playful way. The project was commissioned by Projekt Atol, Ljubljana in 2021. Listen to an interview about the project with Tjaša Pogačar on the first episode of Šum Podcast.
